Inside the "Alphabet House" Box

This month we are in the middle of Mother Goose Time's "Growing Gardens" curriculum. The kids have had a lot of fun doing many of the activities outside and getting dirty. We even took the time to plant our own garden.

Mother Goose Time's June curriculum is called "Alphabet House". This unit looks like a really fun way to review letters and numbers the kids have learned throughout the school year.

Library-Style Story Time Book, Every Month

This month we are introduced to our story book on day two of the unit. This book is a fun retelling of the classic Goldilocks. While you are reading the story aloud to the children they are actively looking for punctuation in the story.
On day seven children will participate in the activity Cozy Chairs. They will find a cozy spot in the house and work together to put the Story Sequence Wands in the correct order.
Finally on day 16 while learning about lodges and dens children will discuss where bears live. They will work together to build their very own den. They then will retell the story of Goldilocks using the Storytelling Set.

 33 Skills Built. Every Month

On day one children will discuss what they would use to build a house. They then will try to build their own block house. Children will then write their name on their nametag and try to make the first letter of their name with blocks.
On day two children will start by talking about the tallest building they have seen. They then will explore the area outside to find the tallest buildings. They will then cut apart their apartment cards and match the letter cards to those on the writing paper.
Children will have a chance to work with shapes with both the RV Night Puzzle and House Shapes activities.
13+ Art Projects, Every Month

On day six children will talk about what rooms have windows and doors. They then will work with paper and a paper bag to create a house with windows and doors.
On day ten children will create their own bed for the monkeys and tuck them in. They then will act out monkeys jumping on the bed as it is read to them.
125 Active Discovery Tools, Every Month

On day four children will be learning about houseboats. They will have a chance to act like their boats are in the middle of a storm by shaking them on a sheet. On day seven children will have the chance to discuss fun things they do with their family. They then will draw a picture on their postcard of something fun they do with their family.

Parents Want the Best, Every Month

Caregivers are provided with a monthly Family Newsletter they can give to parents each month. This month's newsletter introduces parents to this month's book Goldilocks and gives a suggested book list. Lastly, it suggests at home activities parents can do with their children outside of preschool. More Family Connect Tools can be found here.

Child-led Exploration, Every Month

At the bottom of many of the activities there are suggestions on how to simplify or make an activity more challenging. I feel I mostly need to simplify the activities for my 2 year old. I find that Mother Goose Time's Little Goose curriculum is very helpful for finding things I can do with just her while my three year old does the other activities in the curriculum. If you are finding your child needs more of a challenge please check out Mother Goose Time's More Math and Literacy.

Discover Games, Every Month

Children will play the game Choose a Chore on day 11. They will be given a number of chores and they have to choose which one they would prefer over the others.
Children will also have the chance to build their own bird and home and play Guess Which Door this month.
New My Little Journal, Every Month

Children will review their letters and number this month in their My Little Journal. For more writing practice please check out Mother Goose Time's More Literacy resource.

New I Can Read, Every Month

This month children will practice the sight words for,my, and make. They will see these words often in their I Can Read! book. I keep our letter and sight word flowers close during circle time and we look at them each time we do circle time. Many of the resources I use for our circle time are from Mother Goose Time's Welcome Kit. The kids especially love our Circle Time CD. When it starts to play they know it is time to start the day!

New Letters, Numbers, and Shapes, Every Month!

This month students will review their letters, numbers, and colors. During circle time children will add at least one letter to their alphabet house. At the end of the month they will build their own house. Students will visit the letter sets over and over again throughout the month. They are a great long time addition to your learning space also.

New Friendship Feathers, Every Month

This month children will focus on being helpful. Children will add the helpful friendship feather to the others on their bird house. They will also have their very own I am honest bracelet.
Monthly Skills Chart, Every Month
A helpful skills chart and gathering list are included every month. The skills chart is a great piece to hang where parents can see. I refer to the gathering list each week before I go to the grocery store.
